Student Centered Wikis

How would you rate your Wiki skills? Are you Wiki with it? Wikis are Web 2.0 tools that allow for ongoing documentation of student work and group authoring. This webinar will address how teachers can create student centered Wikis that promote student learning and discussions online. Participants will learn about a variety of Wiki-based projects and additional widgets to enhance Wikis.

Michele L. Haiken, Ed.D. is currently a middle school teacher at Rye Middle School in Rye, NY and founder of The Teaching Factor. Currently, Michele teaches academic electives to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and administrated wikis for each of her classes. Her Wiki gained international attention in 2008 when it was highlighted on Wikispaces Blog. Michele presents at conferences in the Northeast and has taught graduate level educational courses at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY.

This wiki was created in 2008 for students participating in a semester long rock history course taught at Rye Middle School.Wikispaces Blog highlighted this wiki in 2008 for its use and creative wiki activities posted on the wiki. Every year new pages and student projects are posted on the wiki. Activities ranging from digital storyelling, glogs, reflections, and student created wiki pages.
Beyond RMS wikispaces was created for a career exploration elective at Rye Middle School. This wiki contains activities for students on topics such as college, multiple intelligences, a student written blog about guest speaker careers and student created Glogs about a variety of careers. This wiki is a student generated wiki with new activities and pages being added daily.
This wiki was created for a media literacy elective taught to 7th and 8th grade students. This wiki contains reflections on assignments ranging from advertising and the internet, the wikipedia debate, and deconstructing reality television. Student created videos and other created projects.
This Wiki was designed to support the professional development classes I teach and lectures presented at various conferences.
